Fortress of Kavala

An impressive fortress located at the top of the peninsula of Panagia (the old town). It was originally built in the Byzantine era to defend the city of Christoupolis (old name of Kavala) but completely destroyed during the Ottoman invasion of 1391. It was rebuilt again in 1425 and it is this later reconstruction, which still stands today.

Hike up through the old town to visit the castle and witness breathtaking views of Kavala and the Aegean sea. You can take a fascinating tour where you will learn about Kavala and Eastern Greece’s intriguing history. Visitors can see the central circular tower, the tower’s roof, arsenal and food storage that was converted to a prison in the 18th century, the guardhouse and the cistern. The entire acropolis is built with local granite stone mixed with marble and bricks. There is also a modern open-air theatre that regularly hosts music events, theatrical plays and various festivities. If you need a beverage after your tour there is a cafeteria located next to the theatre, which offers refreshments.
