Nestos river is the ideal resting, feeding and nesting place for migratory birds during the winter period and is thus renown for its rich bird life. In fact, over 227 species of birds have been recorded to date! This includes rarities such as the Hoplopterus Spinosus. Greece is the only country in Europe, which nests this striking bird. You might even get lucky and spot a Phasianus Colchicus by the riverside, which is also a unique find in Europe as it mainly frequents around the Caspian sea. Only two populations have been found in Europe: in Greece and Bulgaria. Many species of heron birds can also be found in the area and three different species of cormorants.
